Magnolias in Washington, D.C.

Kaleidoscopes.
Broken mirrors.
Reflections on water.

I have always been intrigued by things that create new visions of the world around me. I developed my artistic technique–making collages by hand from my photographs–to devise my own way of remixing reality, so I can reflect the world in the surreal way I see it.

I shoot many photos of a scene, arrange them to make a new vision, cut them into small pieces, and glue them together on illustration board. The layering of the pieces creates a subtle three-dimensional effect, adding depth and casting shadow.

My work subverts the “truth” photographs are thought to document. I aim to transform an increasingly digital medium with the power, creativity and intimacy of the hand. From a distance, each collage looks like a painting; get closer and you see photos; and further inspection will reveal the intricate mosaic of its construction.

My work has been exhibited in galleries and art festivals in Paris, New York, and throughout the Washington, D.C. region.
